In January 2013, Aldea Maya decided to address the school garden issue in Chuk Muk Elementary school.
Our goal is to have numerous teaching gardens that produce food for the school lunch program and individual class projects. As well as teach students about :
composting, seed collection, organic gardening, native plants and nutritious foods
Our first step was hiring some of the villagers to start prepping the site. As you can see from the photo we started by breaking up cement left over from building the school. This is really hard work.
We then had to remove a ton of large rocks and sift the dirt.
The soil is very poor and we needed to add manure, coffee pulp and purchased organic compost which we collected and bagged.
We then needed to build a fence.
We also built a worm house and cement composters.

In 2014, we started on the second garden.
This garden required the building of retaining walls. Luckily we have the rocks.

In 2015, we produced 3 more gardens.
Sponsored students in high school gave 10 hours of volunteer time in the gardens.
