Well another year is coming to an end. We have had a very busy craft fair season with our biggest group of volunteers yet. We want to thank all our amazing helpers, we could not function without you. I can really see why Santa has elves.
We have one very proud single mom. Concepcion Sapalu just graduated from her 6 month sewing program.
Jaime, our manager, has been very busy sending off report cards to our sponsors.
We are very pleased that another one of our students, Rigoberto, that we have been helping for 6 years, just graduated high school. This is our 3rd student to take from Elementary school to graduation.
Rigoberto has dreams of studying Business Administration/ Computers in University. It is possible to study on Saturdays for 6 years to get your degree. This helps the poorer families, as the student can work during the week. The costs of courses vary, but his course costs about $1500/ year.
In Guatemala the school year starts in January. Education is the only viable long term plan to combate poverty. Aldea Maya has many students with full school scholarship. Attached is a letter from one of our students, Carlos, to his sponsor. You only have to read it to know the effect of sponsorship on a students life.
Diego and Jaime have been working repairing fences in the school garden. While our high school students have been cleaning around the school as part of their volunteer time.
IMAP, the permaculture organization we partner with, has been working with more families in Chukumuk to get vegetable gardens. In the last few weeks, 2 more families received garden. These gardens will help supply much needed nutritous food
Five of our high school students voluteered to work with IMAP on these gardens. IMAP was so pleased with our wonderful volunteers that they gave them free permaculture classes and asked if they could come and help in another village.
They also fed them tasty lunches which they gobbled up.
The students had the additional new experience of interacting with North American students taking an IMAP course. This whole experience is expanding students horizons and giving them possible ideas for future studies.
Aldea Maya has been working in Vancouver Island schools teaching students about third world issues. These Victoria students have made bookmarks in Spanish for middle school students in Guatemala. They cannot wait to get their own bookmark from a Chukumuk student.
Our next trip to Guatemala starts in January 2016. To keep up to date on our daily adventures remember to check out the BLOG at www.aldeamaya.ca. Our website is currently being revamped.
Happy Holidays from Aldea Maya
