Today we were totally tourists.

We took the boat to San Pedro and then a tuk tuk ( 3 wheeled mini taxi) to San Juan. San Juan is on the lake but you need to hire a private boat. Our way was way cheaper.

We asked our driver to drop us off at a Women’s dying and weaving Co-op.  We were taken to “Asociacion de Mujeres en Colores Botanico” This is the first time I have visited this cooperative. It is very large and has 40 women members. Cooperativabotanica@yahoo.com.mx

We were taught all about organic cotton…which the village grows. Then shown how to hand spin the cotton. Our next classes were on botanical dying. It is facinatng how the different plants produce the different colours and how banana stems set the dye. We met another NGO at the co-op. They are called sharing the dream in Guatemala. They have a beading cooperative in Santiago and a Elders feeding centre. They are going to be starting an Elders Centre in Chuk Muk and we are going to meet on Friday and talk about working together.

Next we wandered this lovely village going to the Catholic Church, viewing all the murals and visiting a Herb and Plant garden that produces soaps, shampoos and herbal remedies.

Finally we visited many art galleries. This village is famous for it’s artists.

San Juan is a very lovely village that has direction and promise. It is clean, clean, clean. They do not want to be inhabited by foreigners  It is great to come visit and buy but they want to keep their own culture alive. Just recently they kicked out a bunch of Canadian Hasidic Jews. This group was under investigation in Canada for ill treatment of their children…they packed up left Canada and headed to Guatemala.

Next we returned to San Pedro. We did a walk through the village and headed to the Italian Bakery for lunch…Totally Yummy. San Pedro is a village that has been swamped with hippies and is known for it’s drug culture. The changes that have happened in San Pedro are probably the reason San Juan is the way it is.

We then returned to Santiago on the boat. This was not a pleasant trip as the waves were huge. They covered the passengers with a big blue tarp. There was no life jackets in sight…totally felt like a floating blue coffin. We made it home though some on board did lose their lunch.
