Rita and I had spent the night in Santiago Atitlan and as a result did not have to take the boat and had an early start.

Our first stop was Ana and Nineth’s home. These 2 sisters should be in Basico and I had not seen them at school. Once again  had the fun job of trying to convince parents that their children needed the opportunities offered by continuing school. This family just had another baby!!!! Oh I wish birth control was cheap enough here.

This family has a mom and a dad and 6 children and is trying to support themselves through beadwork. In some families of similar size the parents do everything to get their children an education but most in this village do not get it’s importance. Thinking 5 years ahead to their children having a good job and helping the family is a really hard sell.

After another hour of back and forth conversation I had convinced the family to let the 2 girls continue school.   Yahoo!

Next we returned to school were we handed out more supplies and Rita wrote down notes on each student.

Here are the moms lining up to see if their child can get help to go to school. I will have more supplies to hand out on Monday as Aldea Maya can help these students.

We then visited my sponsor family. This is a family were the mom is thinking ahead. The mom received a vegetable garden last year  and it has done well. She had used some of the organic compost and started papaya plants. She had noticed I buy papaya plants from Panajachel and bring them to the village to use in my grade 3 garden and nutrition project. She wanted to know if I would buy from her. Last September I bought her a 100 pound bag of compost to start this program. She now has dozen of plants to sell me. She also has started lime trees from seeds.

I am so excited when a family takes the initiative!!!!!

Last year her son Gerado received 2 chickens in our grade 5 chicken and nutrition program. These are exceptionally good egg laying birds. The family has 3 roosters and she has at least 7 chicks from last years chicken. We will be buying one rooster and these chicks for our NEW chicken instruction area at the Chukumuk school. Therefore this mom will have more income. The mom also weaves and we will probably buy guipils from her.

The son lisandro has started to make carvings to sell. They are basic but good. He has to borrow the carving tools. As his sponsor I am going to but him a set of tools so he can hone his skills. He also likes to paint.

I just had to take this picture of this group of elementary school students setting up their own little kitchen in the school yard.
