Today Rita and I spent the day in Panajachel. We visited Gladis Morales and her family. Gladis is starting first year Basico and is really excited. Her older brother Mario was interviewed by Rita as Rita is going to write the family history on the website.
He loves to paint and gave us a painting to give to Gladis’ sponsor Gerri Cook.
The mom, Maria is our sewing person. She makes all the flannel sanitary pads. She was very happy that Aldea Maya was purchasing more pads as she is 3 months behind in her rent and is about to be evicted. Maria makes Q400 a month washing clothes however her rent is Q 450. She has been using her earning to buy food for her family of 4. We were able to pre pay for 17 sets of Flannel pads which gave her enough to pay the back rent. It is very stressful to be a single mom in Guatemala!!!!
Maria has always wanted to learn to read and write. She never had the opportunity to go to school. Rita is an elementary teaching specialist and she is starting to give Maria classes at night. Gladis is attending the classes so that she can continue to help her mom when Rita returns to Canada.
We then went to the market to buy 34 metres of flannel. We also purchased fabric so that Gladis could get a corte ( traditional skirt) and a Faha ( woven embroidered belt), this is her first opportunity to have traditional clothes and she is very excited.

When I went into the kitchen I was surprised to see a gas stove and blender. I was wondering how this poor family could afford these items. However when I asked Maria she said that she had found them in the garbage and the blender did not work and only one element on the stove kind of worked. However she does not have money for gas so she can not use it. We all had a chuckle that she was trying to look rich!!!
Aldea Maya will also be replacing the inner candeles in the water filter. Their onil stove has been moved several times and no longer functions properly. We have asked Mayan Families to help us repair these stoves.
We also noticed that there are huge gaps in the wood walls in her home. Maria said that it lets in tons of wind and rain as they are on the top floor of a 3 story home.
