Hi Aldea Maya supporters,
In Guatemala, the school year is winding down. Jaime has been sending the third quarter report cards to all our sponsors.
Here we have Josefa. She is in grade 8. She is doing very well in school. You may get confused by the numbers at the end of her report card. This would be her final grade if she got zeros in her last term.
Marvin writing his exams.
In September, one of our Carrera ( high school) students, Marvin, was interviewed by United World Colleges Guatemala. UWC has 14 international colleges and interviews students in over 140 countries. UWC Guatemala interviewed 50 students for 5 placements. The criteria is a 85% average for all three years of middle school. Marvin had to write exams and go through a rigorous interview process. It is amazing just to be interviewed. We have all our fingers and toes crossed hoping he will be chosen for the 2 year international baccalaureate program. Check out the UWC website to find out more about this fantastic education oportunity.
We have some sad news. Our garden guy, Pedro, is really ill. He is unable to work and has lost a ton of weight. He has visited several doctors and has a variety of diagnosis. We are sending him for more test and hope he is treatable. We are very thankful to Edith for donating money to cover his medical costs. Edith has volunteered several times and just loves Pedro and his family.
We have installed 4 more energy efficient stoves this week. We would like to thank students at E.J. Dunn, Port Alberni, for raising the money to make this possible.
Here is a single mom of 4, Maria, with her new stove.
In the last few weeks we have had some amazing donation. Chuck at the Insurance Brokers of B.C. donated 100Usb memory sticks. We also received a huge bag of embroidery thread from Joy Jacobson.
We are always looking for donation. Right now we are needing women’s underwear. We are going to be giving 10 women reusable, flannel sanitary pads. We need 4 pairs of undies per women.
