Hola,
January started with a big adventure in Chuk Muk, Guatemala. Aldea Maya was asked to help organize and host a Cosmic Convergence in the village. The ” C.C.” was a day of yoga, face painting, music, mural painting and organic gardening.
At least 100 people from all over the world were in attendance plus 60 Aldea Maya students. Not only was it an amazing experience for the student, but we made some worthwhile connections.
One of these connections was Elena Chiquival. Elena is the Director of Consorcio, a local women’s cooperative with 3000 women. The coop was very interested in our CHAYA project. Chaya is an easily grown, drought and bug tolerant super food.
For several years, we have been teaching the students in the Basico about Chaya and giving every student a plant. We are now working with Consorcio to educate the many members in their coop, as well as, all the families that receive vegetable gardens through IMAP. The most exciting aspect is that the women in the Aldea Maya coop are now teaching the cooking and nutrition classes. The sale of our $15 Christmas cards has made it possible for us to start this program, which can help stop malnutrition and empowers women at the same time.
Our Coop sold chaya leaves and cuttings which increased the income earned.
Through out IMAP partnership another family received a vege garden. A wonderful group from Fort Collins, Colorado paid for the garden and invested a ton of sweat equity. The family already had numerous fruit trees through our programs at the elementary school.

Through full sponsorship we now have 12 elementary, 25 middle, 30 high school and 3 university students. Usually under 1% graduate high school in the highlands of Guatemala…we are definitely increasing the odds. If you are interested, we have 3 high school students needing part sponsorship. Every high school has a different cost. The Business Administration schools are private and more expensive. It would be $200/ year.
This is Rigoberto Lopez Sapalu. He is our latest university student. Rigoberto is studying accounting. University is expensive and Rigoberto has 4 sponsors covering the costs.
Over the last year, a women’s service group, Altrusa, has generously donated to our programs. Thank you for helping to supply many great reading books to the Basico students and textbooks to the teachers.
Six more families received energy efficient wood burning stoves in the village due to our partnership with Cameron and card sales This greatly increases a families quality of life.
We have a lot more great information to tell you but we will wait for the February Newsy, Newsletter.
