Aldea Maya has partnered with the Chuk Muk Elementary school to start a preschool for 3 to 5 year olds. Fortunately the government is paying for the 2 teachers. We are working to make it a pleasant area filled with exciting toys and puzzles.
All the walls were bare cement block, which is not very cheery. Our first step was to paint one and 1/3 of the large walls. We then asked Carlos, the mural painter, if he would work with some of our students to create a bright, fun mural. He volunteered 2 half days. The students were very excited about creating a mural. We would like to thank Springwood Elementary for fundraising and buying all the paint.
We were not able to finish the mural but what we accomplished is stunning.
Carlos also wants to come back and give art classes to some of the artistic students.
One of our volunteers, Jim, heard about the preschool with NO toys and was able to collect and bring down 100 pounds of toys.
All the wonderful people that donated toys, your are bringing joy daily to 65 children. These children do not have toys at home and it is such a fantastic, fun learning experience for them to build with blocks and play pretend. We are now collecting toys for the students in kinder, if anyone wants to donate.
For several years the elementary school has been trying to have the students separate organic from inorganic waste. It has not been in the least bit successful. As a result, our composters have been filled with garbage. To address this problem, our manager, Jaime, developed a wonderful worm information program. We now have a school worm mascot called Lorenzo Lombriz.
The students now have an understanding of composting and are now making rich, organic soil to put in the school garden. Here are some of the students collecting vegetables to make a salad from one of the school gardens.
One of the most important goals for Aldea Maya is to facilitate income generation. In a village in the highlands of Guatemala this is not an easy proposition. So you can imagine how happy we are that IMAP has started an income generating Amaranth Project with families in Chuk Muk.
Amaranth is a plant native to Guatemala that produces thousands of highly nutritious seeds. Hundreds of years ago it was one of the staples in the Mayan diet and was used expensively in their religious ceremonies. Unfortunately the invading Spaniards outlawed it and burned all the fields. This had a disastrous effect on the Mayan nutritional status. We are working with IMAP to not only reintroduce it into the diet but IMAP will also purchase excess seeds that are produced. The grade 5 students are learning all about Amaranth, as well.
