Our plan was to go to Panabaj today. The people who live in Chuk Muk are the survivors of the Panabaj mudside. We still have sponsor students in Panabaj and today we were going to visit the families. However, all the families we were visiting could use chaya and papaya plants and therefore we first headed to Chuk Muk to get them.

Cruz, one of our students in third year Basico road in the pick up with us. I was interested to find out if he had eaten today. I was not surprised to find out he had not and so we bought him some fruit. We rented a truck for today as we were going to 2 villages and had numerous stops and there a few pick ups available to us.

Our first stop is at Dolores’s home. We have 6 children sponsored here. When we last visited we noticed they had 6 chicken. I had asked if they produced any eggs. They said “NO”. I have noticed that a lot of chickens do not produce eggs as they do not get enough to eat.

Chaya is an excellent chicken food and chickens whom are fed it produce an abundance of eggs. We gave the family chaya and a papaya plants to plant. We packed Dolores into the truck as she has a lot of eye problems and we needed to get her medicine.

Our next stop was Tzan Cha. We visited the home build by Porch de Solomon and 2 of our Carrera students ( that were hired and trained by Porch de Solomon). We wanted to see the finished home but we had been asked by Porch to see if the family was maintaining a clean home. The house was very clean and just wonderful.

The family now has an energy efficient stove, 2 sets of bunk beds, pila ( cement sink) and a washroom. They were living in a cane hovel prior to this new home. We had chaya and papaya plants for this family as well.

We went into the kitchen and reviewed the pots and explained how to cook the chaya. We even left some leaves so they could cook some for that nights dinner.

We headed back through Panabaj and visited Elena’s home. Her sponsor Rita had a letter and a few small gifts. She also wanted to give the family an energy efficient stove ( theirs was not working optimally and some food. In talking to the mom we found out that Elena was getting headaches. This is a problem we deal with often. One of the causes can be from getting amoebas from unfiltered water.

The family asked if they could get a water filter instead of a stove and if they could use some of the food money for doctor and medicine.

We also updated our information on each student and took pictures of their report card. We visit families in their homes so we can assess how the family is doing.

So the plans have changed and we are going to try to get Dolores and Elena water filters. The village of Chuk Muk is suppose to have a treatment facility…though I have never seen it.
