One the main challenge we’ve faced here in Chuk Muk was the soil fertility. Indeed, it was very poor soil, beaten by the sun and whipped by strong winds.

So these last years the focus has been to improve soil fertility, and this is always an on-going process. You can never have enough organic matter in your soil.

So what do we do here in Chuk Muk ?

First, all our veggie beds have been dug up to 60cm deep, and we’ve mixed the soil with our home made black gold, compost.

Chumil, our amazing gardener, has been doing bokashi for months now.

Bokashi some organic matter that we keep in anaerobic setting and ferment with microorganisms so that it’s alive. And we’ve put this bokashi on every beds, and every weeks we spray it … with more micro-organisms !

And a question that you might ask is, where do we get our organic matter from ? In times of school class, we have a team of chefs making healthy snacks for the children from our garden veggies, and they have plentiful of organic “waste”. However in time of school holidays …

Well ! We go on the market ! Santiago has the biggest market around the lake, which means a lot of organic waste after market !

In Permaculture, we definitely believe that “there’s no such thing as waste, there’s only resource at the wong place”. For us, all these cabbage leaves, rotten tomatoes, newspaper … All of these are gold ! So when we saw all these resources going in these trucks somewhere to be dumped, we went to the municipality to ask where was going these trucks, and if it would be possible for them instead, to deliver us at the school ?

For the moment, we have organic matter from the market, and we participate in the prevention of eutrophication of the lake due to the accumulation and leaking of nutrients.

We also take good care to mulch our beds. This way, it keeps the humidity in the soil between the watering of the morning and the one of the afternoon, it prevents weeds from invading everything, and the mulch decompose on our beds, fertilising it in the same time. Only benefits !

We also started to grow comfrey ! Comfrey is what we call a dynamic nutrient accumulator. Sounds cool eh ! It is actually ! This plant takes up nutrients from the subsoil and brings it up to the topsoil, making it available for all the plants around. It is also a very fast-growing plant, and as you can imagine its leaves are full of nutrients. You can easily just chop and drop its leaves and use it as a great mulch.

Last but not least, we grow a lot of beans !

Beans are what we called in the common language, a “nitrogen-fixing plant”. And well, it is not exactly correct. Beans creates in their roots a suitable habitat for nitrogen-fixing bacterias to thrive, and they are the one who convert the nitrogen from the air (unavailable to plants), into another form of nitrogen, available for the beans and the surrounding plants. You can never go wrong with beans in your garden !
