Today was a very exciting day. For many years Aldea Maya has wanted to start it’s own women’s beading cooperative but many factors have stood in the way. Firstly knowing which women to include, as you want to make sure the bead work is of a certain caliber.

We also needed women that can work together. And we needed to know which products to produce. Well we started this Friday. Most of the women in the cooperative have children sponsored by Aldea Maya in Basico ( middle school) or carrera ( high school). We wanted to reward families that sacrifice to give their children a higher education. This is a huge sacrifice for many of our single mom families as their children could be earning money to put food on the table or to pay the electricity or water bill.
However to start a cooperative you really need an order that will give the women work. Several months ago we heard about Westjet’s Blue Santa Project. Westjet set up a sleigh in the Dominican Republic and gave the villagers a Christmas. We though ” Hey we make red Santas Why not blue”.. Jaime made an amazing video and we sent it off to Westjet headquarters. This week we got the confirmation that Westjet wanted 1000 blue Santas. This is the catalyst for starting our women’s group. On Wednesday we chose 8 women for the group and explained that we would like to have around 16 women. That they group had to find the other women and chose a women responsible for quality control and maintaining orders. When we arrived for the meeting there were 17 women and they had chosen a leader.

One member of the group is Miriam’s mom, Marcela. She is very ill, having had her thyroid removed several years ago ( a surgery we paid for), and needs expensive monthly medicine
We approached the group to have Marcela run a small bead store, in this way she can sell beads to the group and make money for her medicine. The group had no problem with this idea.

We are now also selling a variety of beautiful bead work to 4 stores on Vancouver Island ( Global Village Stores). This plus our own sales of bead work should help to keep the cooperative in business. We have plans to have the women take courses on new beading ideas and we will be teaching nutrition and cooking classes in the future.
