The group continued today with more garden projects. Our first stop was at our garden lady’s home to pick up papaya plants. We had preordered 2 months ago 70 plants. Unfortunately their was a mix up and she only had 33 plants for us to purchase.

This is sad as she is a very poor single mom of 2 boys in Basico and needs the cash. She does however have citrus trees which we will buy from her next week. We had to think fast as we now had 37 students and no plants for them. I remembered that Pedro had mentioned that we had tons of tiny papaya seedlings in our garden  …probably from the added compost.

We gave Jaime a quick call before he headed to work and got him to pick up 100 plastic plant starter bags. We headed to the school and started making nutritious soil using compost, organic soil we had purchased from the municipality, aged chicken poop, wood ash and a coffee breakdown product. We were all set!!!!

However this project went from giving the students a papaya plant and a bag of compost to organizing 2 classes to fill the bags with soil, re pot the papaya seedlings, water and put into our filtered garden area to grow for the next month.

I must say the students had a ton of fun re potting the seedlings.

The 2 main gardens are beside the metal shack that is used to produce the food that all the students eat at 12. For many students it is the only really nutritious meal they eat each day. In this shack they produce food for around 500 children. They have 2 metal stoves but to produce this much food like boiled corn and black beans they use 3 other blazing open fires.

It is super sad as the women can barely breathe and their eyes are watering due to the excessive smoke. We could handle less than a minute in the room and they are their for hours. It is so medically unsafe. We are making a video to put on Eileen’s facebook page and on this blog ( in the next few days…we have to make the video pretty)
