The grade 4’s finished their mini greenhouses today. This is really labour intensive as each child labels his/her mini plant pots with the type of seed it holds. Then they 3/4 fill the pot with rich organic soil that contains compost from our new composters. Then they add the seed.

Today we used chipilin, papaya, pole bean, and lettuce. They next had to fill the pot with more soil, get it iinto the bottom of the pop bottle, water it and put on the lid. This may not seem like a lot of work but with 55 students it sure is. We also needed to take every students picture.

This whole process was seamlessly run by Jaime, Pedro, Eileen and Theo. This project is just awesome as it uses garbage material, gives the students lots of hands on experience and teaches about what seeds need to start to grow: warmth, water, good nutritious soil,  filtered sunlight and a humid environment. Next the students put their project into our new corn stalk filtered garden area. The school gardens are really going fantastic and all the school classes are involved with planting, maintaining, watering and eating the produce.

We want to thank West Coast Seeds and Lacombe Christian School for helping to make our vision a reality. We would also like to give a big thank you to “Altrusa” a women’s community service group. Their Nanaimo chapter had given Aldea Maya a wonderful donation.

This donation is to be used to supplement the middle school teachers salaries. The government pays very low salaries and Aldea Maya helps to make it a more accurate amount considering all the time and effort these teachers expend. To make matters worst the government has yet to pay the middle school teachers anything and they are in their 4th month of work.
