Today the group split into 2 groups.
Graham and Pedro worked on the new school garden. We are expanding the school garden to enable more classes in the elementary school to have their own section. This is very hard work as the ground is totally hard and filled with large rocks…some boulders even.
They are also constructing an outdoor classroom with a roof. This building is really important as it is difficult for a whole class of students to see and hear when in the garden. This outdoor classroom will have a semi circle seating area which will enable all students to see and hear the garden and nutrition classes.
Six Carrera ( high school) male students helped in the garden today moving rocks and clearing. Every fully sponsored student in Basico and Carrera must give 10 hours of volunteer time in the elementary school. This is a thank you for being sponsored. The Carrera boys will be working expanding the school garden. The Carrera female students will be helping set up our home ec., music, drama, art and dance room. They may also help in our adult nutrition and cooking classes.

Our second group was at Maria Luis’s home teaching Maria Luisa and her mom, Candelaria, to use a sewing machine. Vicki demonstrated threading the machine and bobbin. They repeated this process many times until they did not make any mistakes. Jaime was also tought this process as he will need to help Maria Luisa and Candelaria if they have any problems.
They are very excited to be learning to sew. The family will be purchasing the machine through a microloan. They payments will be beadwork as the family does not have any money.
Maria Luisa should be going to Carrera this year but the family is very poor and needs her to work. They cannot afford her going to school 5 days a week. However in Guatemala they have Saturday high school for students 18 years old or older. Maria Luisa is 17. She is going to continue her studies next year when she is 18. She will study to be a secretary on Saturdays.
We are going to be showing them how to make sanitary pads which we will purchase from them. We usually use a serger to make them but this is way to difficult for a beginner. Vicki is going to show Jaime how to use the serger and we will teach Maria Luisa and her mom at a later date.
Vicki use to test eyesight and work for CNIB. Candelaria could not thread the needle. Vicki tested her eyes in the afternoon and found she needed reading glasses which she had on her. OH the joy in Candelaria’s face when she could see again. This family makes money through beadwork and the mom has not been able to help. Now she can help her family make more money!!!!!
Louise spent the afternoon at the hospital with a very painful eye. The doctor was not sure of the cause of the problem but prescribed a steroid and antibiotic AND a eye patch…….no photos are going to be seen of my pirate look.
