The day started off in one of our school gardens. The kindergarten class was up in the garden learning about organic and inorganic. We have a terrible problem with garbage in Chukumuk. Most of the students do not know the difference between garbage and organic material. The students were shown the worms in our compost bin.
Pedro, our garden guy, will be working with the kinder students ensuring that only organic enter our compost bin. This class has 2 garden plots. In one they will be planting radishes. This is a perfect plant as everyone loves radishes here and they grow so fast. Their other garden plot will have cucumbers. The class has it’s own watering can and different students will be sent every day to hand water.
Today was our first Happy Bike Day.
We are able to purchase bicycles due to a generous donation by Mapa-Cafe in Germany and our Christmas card sales. Thank you to those who so generously donated.
8 students in Carrers ( high school) received bicycles today) We decided to buy better quality bicycles that had aluminum wheels, rat traps ( which will make transporting food from the market easier), bike pumps and locks. These bicycles cost 35% more.
We also bought helmets and fitted them to each students head. Finally we attached strong lights to the handle bars of each bike. The students who received the bicycles are going to high school in the afternoon and return home when it is dark. Bicycle lights are essential.

I have to say these were the happiest 8 boys on the planet today.
The students are each donating 20 key chains for receiving the bicycles. In this way the students are working to purchase their bicycles. In the next month more students will be receiving more bicycles as Mapa-Cafe has more Happy Bike Days.
In the afternoon Senor Gris started designing the outdoor classroom that he will construct with Pedro this week.
