Today is a sight seeing day for Vicki and Senor Gris ( Graham Calder’s new Guatemala name).

Our first stop was the mudslide  site. The mudslide in Panabaj occurred in October 2005. It killed hundreds of Tz’utujil Mayans.  After the initial mudslide new homes were constructed on the site. They were 70% completed. An elementary school was built as well. Then the powers that be decided that this site was unsafe to build on…as a result all these buildings have been abandoned. The Calder’s could not believe how wasteful this is.

There is one family of 3 living in an old building at the slide site. They are living in complete squalor. They rooms are filthy because they have no broom. The walls are pitch black as they are cooking using only a piece of metal. There use to be a chimney …now there is a big whole in the roof. They sleep on rags on the floor’ which fortunately is cement. They have no electricity and would not have the means to pay the electricity bill. I have to say this home situation upset me quite a lot. Senor Gris has a solar light that he is going to give to the family. I will purchase them a broom.

The next stop was at the Chojpen Tacaxoy home. This is a lovely but very poor family with 8 children. They have chickens but they produce no eggs. I find this happens a lot as the eggs are not produced if the chickens are not fed enough. We are going to be giving this family Chaya plants. They will be able to cook with the leaves, thus increasing their nutrient intake. And they can also use the leaves for chicken food. Lidia, the second oldest child, just completed high school. She is wanting to go on and study nursing. This costs a ton of money …half of the money needed is for transportation to Esquintla which is several hours away. Lidia is going to wait a year to study as they may be starting a nursing University in Santiago next year. She would not be able to switch universities  so we decided it is better to wait. Anyone wanting to help Lidia follow her dreams can make a donation on Paypal.

Next stop on our tour was the memorial site for the 1990 massacre in Panabaj, This occurred during the civil war. The people from this village have had to endure a considerable amount of tragedy!!!!!!!
