Was back in Chukumuk. Spent the morning handing out more school supplies to the students wanting to go to Basico ( middle school)

On Monday we had met a group of Rotarians from Vancouver Island In San Lucas Toliman. One of the ladies in the group is the mother of a friend of mine in Qualicum…what a small world!!!! The group had asked me about my projects in Chukumuk and decided to do a quick trip to the village to see the projects.

I showed them around the school and then we walked to a families home to see one of our garden projects. Then we walked to another home so they could see an alternative stove to the onil stove. Both stoves are energy efficient. One is made of cement and the other is made of concrete.

The group brought soccer balls to donate to the elementary school.

One of our sponsor students Andrea Ramirez was bought a beautiful Traje by her sponsor Gerri Cook. I have never seen a little girl be so happy. Andrea’s family is so poor she would never get a new traje. We also checked out the houses cooking situation. It is very bad. I could not breathe in the room. They badly need a energy efficient stove with a chimney. I will add them to the list. They also do not have a water filter.

Back at the school I found Ana Barbara and gave her the gift and letter ( in Spanish) from her 8 year old sponsor Kelyn Johns.

Later in the afternoon I had a meeting with the teachers of the Basico. We discussed the new schedule as we now have 2 grade 7 classes and one grade 8. We handed out agendas and textbooks. We also are supplying teachers with markers , both permanent and white board…as the teachers salary is too low to buy these supplies. We also explained that Aldea Maya has now bought the school a colour copier and paper.

We went over the supplies that the eachers will need for their courses. For example wood for Industrial arts. The students do NOT have the money for supplies and as a result often have to drop out of school if the Basico askes for more money.

We have to convert a metal shed into the industrial art room. It needs to be very secure or all the tools will be stolen. The teacher of this course is determining how much money this project will cost. We do not want to spend too much money as this building is only temporary.

We are also turning the accompanying metal shed into the Home Economics cooking room. It already has 2 energy efficient wood burning stoves. It just needs a gas industrial stove. We will need tables and shelves as well.

In the grade 8 class I taught an English lesson. I am having the students make a English picture dictionary. They love learning English and talked the Spanish teacher into having me continue through his scheduled class.
