Today we loaded up the Mayan Families truck and headed by road to Chukumuk. It takes about an hour and a half by road.

We stopped at our garden ladies house and picked up 5 large bags of organic compost. These will be used in the school garden.

Our next stop was the San Andres Preschool. MF has 7 preschools in 7 different villages. They are wonderful.

Next we stopped in San Lucas Toliman. A group of Rotarians from Vancouver Island are working in this area. One of them, David, very nicely brought down some recorders and flannel for me. One of the Rotarians looked at me and asked if we had meet. It turns out she is the mom of Ruth Stefanek  a teacher I worked with in Qualicum. What a small world. I invited them to come to Chukumuk to see our programs

Our next stop is Chukumuk. We are visiting as many sponsor families homes today as we can. We are checking on the status of their water filter. We have raised enough money through our Christmas card sales to replace inner filters at the school and at our sponsor family homes.

We are also looking at stoves. Our first stop is the home of Griselda and Vilma Celestins. They live with their grandmother. They are very poor and do not have a stove. This means that they will be using about 3 times the wood they need to. They received a garden last year but have not taken care of it. We will try to make it better as this family has basically no income earner and no food!!!!

Therefore what are you waiting for? Next we went to Natalia’s house. Her sponsor has bought the her a bed and mattress. This was really needed as there are 6 in this family and there is only one bed. Natalia was also given the money to go to Panajachel by boat to get her school supplies for Basico.

Next we visited Juan Daniel, Cristobal and Israel’s home. The sponsor of Israel bought the family a bed several years ago. There are 7 children in this family. As a result Juan Daniel sleeps on the cement floor as there is no bed for him. This families stove needs a new chimney and some work inside. Juan Daniel is one of the students that the family was not letting go to school as they are so poor.

Here is Juan Daniel with the firewood he collected on the mountain. He would make under $2 for a day of very hard work. This is not a bright future. I am so glad we were able to convince this family to allow Cristobal and Juan Daniel to continue studying in Basico.

We visited several more families. At one of our stops Rita was able to give her sponsor student, Elena, her traditional clothes. Does she not look happy and gorgeous. It is so important this community does not lose this tradition for cheap second hand American clothes.

Next stop was the home of Liz  Burger’s sponsor child Lea Concepcion. Their stove needs a lot of work. It was great to see the mom making Lea Concepcion a Guipil ( woven top)

We then went to Ana Ramirez’s home. Rita worked with Ana handing out school supplies. She fell in love with this sweet young lady. Ana is being sponsored through our Christmas card sales. However this year Rita would like to buy her her gym clothing and running shoes. And next year fully sponsor her!!!! .
