Today is the 7th anniversary of the Panabaj mudslide. There is a ceremony in Panabaj that all the grade 4, 5, 6 and Basico students from Chukumuk attended.
The village of Chukumuk is built for the survivors of this horrendous natural disaster that killed hundreds. I felt very honoured to be able to participate in this event.

The boat ride back to Panajachel was really bumpy and when we got to the dock the boat was violently banging against the flimsy rooten wood dock. It was almost impossible for me to get out of the boat with my arthritis and I almost ended up between the boat and dock. Luckily a man managed to grab me at the last minute…I do not want to experience that again!!!!
I was to meet Rosario…the mom of our sponsor student Gladys and walk to the new piece of land that she has been given. However I was in no shape to go for a walk so I treated the group of us to a nice lunch.
Best of friends Jazmin and Gladys
We then took the long walk to Jucanja, which is accross the river from Panajachel. A relative has given her the piece of land and she hopes to be able to put a home on it. There is a Habitat group here that will build a basic but nice 4 room cement home that the owner pays back over 6 years. Rosario lives on the charity of family due to a back problem that makes working difficult. She was abandoned with her 3 kids years ago and the home situation is not good.
Walking to the piece of land
Her hope is to build a home and share it with another of our sponsor families.
We visited the property. It is a bit of a walk from the main road and does not have electricity and may not have water…but to Rosario and her family it is not a piece of land but hope for a better future.
