Having spent the night in one of the teachers homes in Santiago Atitlan I was very happy not to have to take boat or truck at the start of my day.
I stayed overnight at Franciscos home. He teaches computers to both the elementary and Basico students. His family is lovely. But it is a typical family in this area as his father abandoned his mom 15 years ago leaving her to support 6 children with no help. It is amazing that she has managed to get all her students to graduate high school and Francisco is studying engineering software.
The family let me help make the tortillas in the morning. We had a good laugh at how horrible mine were.
Next we headed back to Chukumuk. I am still trying to find out which students have stopped going to school. It is amazing when mothers let 6 year old children quit school. These kids will never speak Spanish, read, write or know their numbers.But you can not convince some mothers that school is important. Some of the children have stopped due to illness and will continue next year. Others have had to stop as there was NO food in their home and they had to go and try to make money.
I visited one of the grade 3 classes and went with some of the students to their home to see their papaya plants. They are so very proud of their papaya plants!!!!
I have been trying to visit different classes and show them the different Bingo games that Aldea Maya has bought for the school. The students never get to play educational games and they love the chance to win and get to yell BINGO.
