I started the day back in Santiago. I met Leticia at the docks. Leticia is in grade 5 and does amazing beadwork. I brought down magnets for her to use when making necklaces. She also is mazing at fixing beadwork and I gave her 80 bracelets to change as they were not selling.
Next I headed to Chukumuk. The children all come running yelling Luisa and almost knock me over. It is such an amazing feeling, children this excited to see me.
Two years ago Aldea Maya bought water filters for all the classrooms in the school as well as for the kitchen. The filters are good for 2 years therefore we need to replace the candelas. I headed to the different classrooms and took pictures for this years Christmas Cards.
I visited the library and with Gaspar, Basico Director, put 3 of each type of Basico textbook in the reference section. Now the Basico students can visit the library and have access to textbooks during the day.
I realized in talking to the Basico students that they are needing more help in mathematics. I discussed this with Gaspar and he has come up with a great solution. The Math teacher is going to hold 3 hour math tutorials on Saturdays for the last 4 weeks of school.
I spent time in the Basico math class today. It was fun helping the students. The math teachers says the students in this Basico are really a great group and very motivated to learn. He is excited to be able to help the students more. Next year we will have to incorporate math tutorials throughout the year.

I also took pictures of the Basico students for the Christmas cards. The cards will cost $50. That is the exact cost to purchase a backpack and all the supplies for second year basico.
After school I spent time walking around the village. I was visiting sponsor families seeing if they needed new water filters and took pictures of the families. I also talked to the families to see how they were doing.
I also visited the gardens we put in. I was really excited to visit Miriams garden as her mom has such a green thumb!!! Unfortunately her garden did not look very good. She is so upset. When she went to church one Sunday theives brock into her garden and stole all the food. Sometimes you get so mad!!!! I am going to see what we can do to make her garden more secure.
Only one garden so far did not produce much food. This garden was bigger than the rest and I think that they probably needed another couple of bags of organic compost.
I visited one family and found out that all three students were no longer in school. The oldest boy broke down in tears when he told me. They have no mother and the father is drinking excessively. They had no food to eat so the children had to quit school and start doing more beadwork. The oldest boy was in Basico and only quit a month ago. I am going to talk to the Director and see if he can come back and catch up the year…he is very devastated. I have money from their sponsor and I will use it to buy food for the last month. I have some idea that may help these children return to school.
The rest of the time was spent buying or commisioning key chains as well as visiting students plants and chickens.
