We got an early start today. We headed to Chukumuk with a pickup full of banana plants.
The 3 gradeĀ 2 classses had a nutrition class on why it is healthy to eat bananas. As these are young students we used fun visual whenever we could.
Next we had a cooking class where the students first had to wash their hands. Next they helped peal the bananas and make a banana smoothy. This was no mean feat with 56 grade 2ers. But have to say they were better behaved than the grade 6 students.
We explained that bananas are a hungery plant that is made up of leaves circling each other. The plant needs wood ash and chicken poop mixed into the soil. The leaves have a high water content soooo this plants roots and it’s leaves need plenty of water everyday.

Then it was time to hand out the plants…some of which were huge!!!
The teachers had to go to another meeting ( boy they have a lot of meetings) Luckily there are always a few students who hang back to see if they can help. We used 3 students to help clean up after the cooking, distribute the plants and to take pictures. Each of these helpers left with a banana plant and some bananas!!!!
We also gave Jane Waite’s sponsor student a beautiful picture drawn by her daughter.
We gave our latest sponsor student Caterina her shoes and school supplies.
