Today we took Herlinda on an adventure!!!
Herlinda is our fantastic plant lady. She had made some mini greenhouses using pop bottles and toilet rolls…keeping some in full sun, others in intermitten sun and full shade. We took those with us to show to the two grade 4 classes that are making mini greenhouses today,
This is a very hands on project and having Herlinda there to explain and help was a godsent. Unfortunately in one class one of the teachers just disappeared for most of the class. When you have 30 students each making 4 peatpots out of toilet rolls where they have to use a template to mark and cut and then fold each bottom like a box …we sure could have used her!!!
Each childs peat pots were marded F, R,S. and P
F for frijoles(beans), S for sandia (watermelon), R for remolacha (beets) and P for pepino ( cucumber)
Then each student headed to the outdoor area where we had 2 large tables set up. One one table we had organic compost and water and 2 of our garden ladies putting in moist soil in each cup.

On the other table we had 5 garden ladies putting the seeds in each cup and covering it with soil.
While I was helping the one class with the soil and seeds Herlinda was teaching the other class about greenhouses and helping them make them.

The Garden Ladies also made their own mini greenhouses and received colouful pepper and cherry tomato seeds.
Herlinda and I then went for a much deserved lunch and caught the boat back to Panajachel. Herlinda had a new experience and really enjoyed it.
I have to say this is the first time that the greenhouse project has been a great success.
